Not only did the earthquake crumble the Haiti Presidential palace, but as many as 100 UN staff are among those believed to be dead after the destruction at the UN headquarters. The Red Cross suspects that approximately three million people will ultimately be affected be the quake. Collapsed hospitals and other buildings have blocked roads, preventing the emergency response teams located on the island from providing help. Needless to say, the electrical power has been affected and communication is difficult.

The people of Haiti will have the full support of the United States in the urgent effort to rescue those trapped beneath the rubble and to deliver the humanitarian relief the food, water and medicine that Haitians will need in the coming days". Many organizations like the Los Angeles County Search and Rescue Team have already begun deploying manpower and supplies to help the Haitia ns. :
